INSTITUTO DE ENGENHARIA DE SISTEMAS E COMPUTADORES

INESC TEC is an Associated Laboratory coordinated by INESC Porto, a private nonprofit institution having as associates the University of Porto, INESC and the Polytechnic Institute of Porto.
INESC TEC is spread in six locations in the city of Porto, has a major pole in Braga (University of Minho) and a smaller pole in Vila Real (University of Trás os Montes and Alto Douro). The activity is conducted by 600 researchers, from which around 300 hold a PhD degree. Its budget reaches 14 million Euros, from which some 35% result from direct R&D contracts with industry and some 30% is international activity. Under INESC TEC, 12 Centres are active in research, technology transfer, knowledge valorization and launching of spin-off companies and also one Associate Unit, CISTER.
Its main areas are Power and Energy System, Telecommunications and Multimedia, Applied Photonics, Enterprise Systems Engineering, Information Systems and Computer Graphics, Robotics and Intelligent Systems, Innovation, Technology and Entrepreneurship, Biomedical Engineering Research, Artificial Intelligence and Decision Support, Advanced Computing Systems, Industrial Engineering and Management, High-Assurance Software Laboratory. The activity at INESC TEC runs under the paradigm of the knowledge to value production chain: knowledge and results generated at basic research are typically injected in technology transfer projects and therefore they receive added social relevance.

UNIVERSIDADE DE COIMBRA

The University of Coimbra (UC) is a reference in higher education and R&D in Portugal, due to the quality of the courses taught at its eight colleges and to the advances achieved in pure and applied research in various scientific domains and on technology related areas.
UC pursues a policy of continuous improvement in several areas, ensuring high standards of teaching and research, as well as being an active participant in the development of the corporate world. The continuous technological development promoted by UC’S different R&D units, addresses the challenges involved in the design, operation and regulation of technologies, bringing together teachers from different scientific disciplines with a long experience in teaching, research, technology transfer and consultancy in different areas in the context of technology.
UC offers advanced training programs in different areas that bind to technology, where we highlight those related to MIT Portugal Program and Associated Laboratories, like ADAI (Association for the Development of Industrial Aerodynamics) , CNC (Centre for Neuroscience and Cell Biology), IMAR-CMA (Marine and Environmental Research Centre), INESCC (Institute for Systems Engineering and Computers at Coimbra), ISR-UC (Institute of Systems and Robotics – University of Coimbra), IT (Telecommunications Institute – Coimbra Pole) and LIP Coimbra (Laboratory of
Instrumentation and Experimental Particle Physics).
The offer in technological research makes UC an undeniable reference in R&D in Portugal, which highlights the excellence of work developed by the R&D units of UC, in particular CEMUC – University of Coimbra’s Mechanical Engineering Research Centre, CEMDRX (Centre for the Study of Materials by X-Ray Diffraction), CFC (Centre for Computational Physics), CISUC (Centre for Informatics and Systems), CI (Instrumentation Centre), CIEC (Research Centre for Civil Engineering), CIEPQPF (Chemical Process Engineering and Forest Products Research Centre), CMUC (Centre for Mathematics of the University of Coimbra), CQ (Centre for Chemistry – Coimbra), CFE (Centre for Functional Ecology) and IBILI (Institute of Biomedical Research on Light and Image), besides the previously mentioned Associated Laboratories
UC stands out also on technology transfer being involved in the promotion of several initiatives, like IPN Incubator and Biocant, and in the creation of diverse technological spin-offs, as Active Space Technologies, Artscan, Crioestaminal, Critical Software, Feedzai, InfoGene, Inogate, iNovmapping, ISA Intellicare, Luzitin, Move Mile, Sensebloom, SPI and Take The Wind, amongst others.
The University of Coimbra is today an example of dynamism in its constant search for improvement and enhancement of knowledge, research and technology contributing decisively to the Improvement of science, technology and to the enhancement of knowledge as an essential element of people’s lives.

IST-ID, ASSOCIAÇÃO DO INSTITUTO SUPERIOR TÉCNICO PARA A INVESTIGAÇÃO E O DESENVOLVIMENTO

The Association of Instituto Superior Técnico for R&D (IST-ID) (http://www.ist-id.pt) is a private not-for-profit institution for which Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) is one of the founding associates. IST is part of the Universidade de Lisboa, and it is the largest and most reputed school of engineering, S&T in Portugal. Its mission is to provide top quality higher education in the areas of Engineering, S&T and Architecture, as well as developing RD&I activities that meet the highest international standards.
IST (http://tecnico.ulisboa.pt) (10.500 BsC+MSc students, 1063 PhD students, 853 faculty, 515 administrative and technical staff) has the following performance indicators: i) the R&D activities are pursued in 23 Units acknowledged by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), all ranked greater or equal to Very Good, from which 1 Exceptional (11 in the country), 5 Excellent (60 in country), and incorporate around 1400 researchers, ii) in 2014 IST had 2046 publications indexed in ISI Web of Science, iii) 4 ERC grants (2 Starting, 1 Consolidator, 1 Advanced), iv) 38 prestigious “investigador FCT”, with five year contracts, awarded in 2012, 2013, and 2014, v) the above referred 23 R&D units attracted, in the period 2007-2012 and under FP7, an amount of 64M€ that corresponds to 26% of the total amount secured by all the R&D units in the country. vi) Participation in the Portugal-USA Programmes established with
Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), whose national director is from IST, Carnegie-Mellon University (CMU), and the University of Texas at Austin (UT Austin), vii) Coordination/Participation in 19 PhD Doctoral Programmes funded by FCT, 3 PhD programmes with MIT, 2 with CMU and 1 with EPFL, viii) from 2010 to 2014, IST had 49 national patents accepted, and submitted 27 requests for patent internationalization, ix) the IST spin-off community integrates 47 companies.
IST-ID is the host institution of CEG-IST where part of the proposed R&D activity will be carried out. Under agreements between IST and IST-ID, IST makes available the majority of facilities, infrastructures and services, where IST-ID R&D activities are carried out. IST-ID carries out the management of the projects whose scientific activities run under the responsibility of the R&D units it hosts.
